100 lbs of rocks.
Heat you can feel everywhere.

Ember uses a 5kW Homecraft heater — built in British Columbia from 100% stainless steel. It's designed for daily use, not design awards.

The massive rock load stores heat and releases it evenly in every direction. No hot spots. No cold feet. Close your eyes and you can't point to where the heat is coming from. That's the difference between a real sauna and a space heater with rocks on top.

Why Homecraft?

Reliability. Over 35 years of manufacturing in Canada. ETL certified to CSA and UL standards. 100% stainless steel construction with protected elements designed for longevity.

How do you judge a heater's reliability? Look at who's selling replacement parts. Some brands have entire sections of their website dedicated to spare elements and replacement stones — and they're frequently sold out. Homecraft replacement parts sit on shelves collecting dust. That tells you everything.

90°C in 60 minutes

Start it from your phone on the way home. The thermowood walls and 100 lbs of rock act as a thermal battery. When you open the door for a cold plunge, the sauna recovers in minutes — not the 20+ minutes that larger saunas need because their heat is in the air, not the mass.

Reduced stratification

Heat stratification is a common problem with electric saunas — scorching hot at head level, noticeably cooler at your feet. A quiet 12V Noctua fan circulates air through the cabin, significantly reducing the temperature gap. The heat feels more even and more comfortable throughout your session.

Thermal Performance

A small sauna is
a better sauna.

Ember heats to full Finnish sauna temperature in about an hour. Start it from your phone on the way home. By the time you've changed and had a glass of water, it's ready.

The thermowood walls and 100 lbs of rock act as a thermal battery. You're not just heating air — you're storing energy in mass. When you open the door for a cold plunge, the sauna recovers in minutes. Most larger saunas are underpowered for their room volume and struggle to reach temperature or recover between sessions.

Ember's compact size means the 5kW heater isn't fighting the room. It fills it. That's why the heat feels consistent and the recovery is fast.

The airflow system

Heat stratification is a common problem with electric saunas — hot at the ceiling, cooler at your feet. A quiet 12V Noctua fan circulates air through the cabin, significantly reducing the temperature gap between head and floor level. The heat feels more even and more enveloping throughout the session.

Wi-Fi Control

Start it from
your phone.

The difference between a sauna you use every day and one you use once a month is friction. If you have to go outside in the rain to turn it on, wait an hour, then go back out — you'll skip it. Every time.

Ember includes Wi-Fi control. Tap your phone from the couch. By the time you've had dinner, it's at 90°C. Walk straight from your door into heat.

Daily ritual, zero friction

Start the heater remotely from anywhere. Monitor temperature from your phone. No need to go outside in the rain to turn it on and come back an hour later. The health benefits come from consistency — and consistency comes from making it effortless to use.

Electrical

Works in every home.

Ember draws 30 amps at 240V — the same as a household dryer. No panel upgrade needed. For homes with limited capacity, a simple load-sharing device lets Ember share a circuit with your dryer or EV charger.

Materials

Why thermally
modified wood.

Thermally modified spruce is heated to over 200°C during manufacturing, permanently changing its cellular structure. The result is wood that's dimensionally stable, naturally rot-resistant, and won't check or split the way cedar does under repeated heat and moisture cycles.

It's harder to work with — every fastener hole needs to be pre-drilled — but it's a superior material for something that lives outdoors and gets heated to 90°C every day.

Cedar looks great on day one. Thermowood looks great on year five.

Maintenance

Maintenance.

Ember is a wood product that lives outdoors. It requires annual maintenance. Anyone who tells you an outdoor wood sauna is maintenance-free is not being honest with you.

Annual care

Once a year, clean the exterior with Osmo gel and reapply UV stain. On a sauna this size, that's a couple of hours on a Saturday afternoon. No ladders, no scaffolding, no crawling behind a massive structure.

The compact size isn't just about thermal performance. It's about making ownership easy enough that you actually do it.

Why not composite siding?

Every low-maintenance material — composite, vinyl, engineered panels — contains chemicals and binders that offgas at room temperature. At 90°C, that offgassing accelerates significantly. You're sitting in a small enclosed space breathing deeply. The materials surrounding you matter. Wood is the only option for a sauna interior and exterior. The question is which wood and how well it's maintained.

Why not a metal roof?

Metal roofing is durable. It's also loud. In a full-sized building you barely notice it. In a compact sauna, heavy rain on a metal roof turns your quiet evening ritual into sitting inside a drum. Ember uses hex asphalt shingles over a proper membrane and flashing system. The shingles are rated for 20+ years of daily outdoor exposure. Silent in the rain, easy to maintain, and simple to repair if ever needed.

The Reality of DIY

This is not
an afternoon project.

Some sauna companies advertise their kits as a simple half-day project. That's not honest. A proper build is roughly 25 hours of labour. It's entry-level carpentry — not assembling furniture.

The foundation needs to be level. The base needs to be square and plumb. Walls and staves need proper air and water sealing details. The final stave is a table saw rip. The door needs to be hung with proper shimming so it doesn't rack in the frame. Then there's staining, stainless banding, roofing membrane, flashing, asphalt shingles, trim, benches, heater mounting, rocks, LED lighting, ventilation, and low-voltage wiring.

Tools you'll need

A table saw. A drill with pre-drill bits. A level. Roofing nailer or hammer. Shims. Caulking gun. This isn't an Allen key and an instruction manual. If you don't own a table saw, this isn't your project.

Working with thermowood

Thermally modified wood is harder and more brittle than cedar. Every single fastener hole needs to be pre-drilled. Every screw needs to be flush countersunk — overdrive it and you risk splitting the wood. Cedar kits are more forgiving to assemble, which is why most companies use them. Thermowood is harder to work with, but it's a superior material that will outlast cedar by years. The trade-off is worth it — but it demands precision during the build.

Why it matters

How a sauna is built directly affects how long it lasts. A base that isn't square means staves that don't seal. A door hung poorly means air leaks and heat loss. Roofing done wrong means water infiltration during the first rain. The build quality isn't just about aesthetics — it's structural. That's why our professional installation comes with a 5-year warranty. We control the tolerances because they matter.
